Theme
The theme of this book is to accept where life takes you and to never take what you have for granted. "...life takes on the meaning that you give it" (Murray 329). The quote perfectly explains the theme of the book because it explains that you have no control over your life and you just have to roll with the punches. If you run into problems while achieving your goal it is up to you to take on the problem and to not think of it as a reason to stop and give up. In the book every time Liz did not have a place to sleep or did not want to get up she thought of it as a "hurdle". She was the hurdler, and achieving her goal was the finish line. She thought of every obstacle as a hurdle to her goal and got over it. If you think of the hurdle as another challenge conquered while trying to attain your goal it will make the victory feel even better. Just like Liz did, you must think of a challenge in a positive way because in the end it will make you "stronger" and make you better. As the quote says, the problems you may face are only how you make them in your mind to be. It is up to you to make the situation a positive one and not get down. Running into tough situations is just another step in attaining your goal. Facing adversity is just another way to make you even closer to the goal you are trying to reach.
